The Parvis de l’Hôtel de la Région project is a concept for the renovation of an urban plaza, developed in collaboration with Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura (RBTA).
Originally designed in the 1980s as part of the larger Antigone development—Ricardo Bofill’s iconic postmodern neighborhood in Montpellier—the Hôtel de la Région and its plaza (Parvis) serve as both the culmination of the monumental neoclassical axis and its opening toward the city’s outskirts.
Naturally, RBTA was invited to redesign this highly mineral square and brought MAMA and Cabinet Merlin into the team. The project’s objective was to introduce more greenery and planted areas while maintaining the functionality of the underground parking garage. Additionally, it sought to create welcoming spaces for daily use and special events such as ceremonies and neighborhood markets.
Four design options were developed, each maximizing green spaces and shade while ensuring continuity along the Lez River.
The proposals also revisited Ricardo Bofill’s original vision, enhancing access to the river and reinforcing its connection to the urban fabric.
