TRNAVA MASTERPLAN

TYPE: Urbanism - Landscape Architecture

YEAR: 2024

LOCATION: Trnava, Slovakia

SIZE: 3,5 ha

TEAM: Labanc Studio, MAMA.

This competition entry, presented in collaboration with Labanc Studio, won a mention prize in the competition organized by Trnava municipality.

The developed area with an area of 3.5 ha, located west of the center of Trnava, directly connects to the development of the village of Ružindol.

The design of the residential complex was to take into account the location at the interface of the urban and rural environment, the criteria for the above-standard quality of public spaces, the principles of sustainability and also respond to the challenges associated with climate change.

The project “Otvorené Dvory” envisions a landscape where the park and urban development blend seamlessly, serving as a buffer between the new Medzihaj district and the surrounding farmland. The proposed development on the edge of the planned masterplan, introduces a fresh architectural front, essentially a new face for the village of Ruizindol.

In line with the Medzihaj masterplan, our proposal features open block compositions respecting projected alignments. These blocks, varying in size, form a cohesive yet diverse urban fabric. This permeable facade fosters visual and physical connections to the park. Green passages from the masterplan naturally extend into the park, evolving into verdant pathways linking the village to the fields. The park serves as a transitional landscape element between the new development and the agricultural surroundings, doubling as a recreational space for both Medzihaj's newcomers and Ruizindol's existing residents.

The project integrates the built fringe, park, and adjacent field into a unified landscape system. The current monoculture field will be transformed into an agroforestry experiment, restoring soils and securing agricultural production. The park will function as a biodiversity reserve and cooling oasis, mitigating summer heat peaks. Inner blocks and streets will be lushly planted to minimize impermeable surfaces, provide shade, and counteract heat island effects.
